As we start to prepare for a new school year, most children feel a mix of excitement and nerves, but for kids in foster care, it often comes with added challenges. Many are starting over in a new neighborhood, with a new family, and at a new school. This can be overwhelming, especially if they're already behind academically from switching schools multiple times and adjusting to different teaching styles.
Beyond academics, foster youth often carry emotional stress from being separated from their families or adjusting to unfamiliar homes. This can show up in the classroom as trouble focusing, acting out, or seeming withdrawn—not because they're "bad" students, but because they're dealing with a lot. Social situations can also be hard, especially when kids are asked about their families, left out of activities, or faced with assignments that assume a traditional home life.
The good news is that support and understanding can make a big difference. When educators, caregivers, and school staff work together to offer patience, flexibility, and encouragement, foster kids can thrive. Let's help make back-to-school a time of hope, connection, and fresh starts for every student.
